In response to a recent lawsuit in the United States against barefoot running shoe manufacturer Vibram, the Australian Podiatry Association (NSW&ACT) has released this statement:
“The Australian Podiatry Association (NSW& ACT) recommends people that are considering barefoot running should consult a podiatrist that has solid experience in sports podiatry so they can assess their needs and foot type. Also if barefoot running is to be used it must be part of a mixed training regime where different types of running shoes suited to the individual’s foot and running style are used.
“There have been a series of claims surrounding barefoot running in improving strength and running style however there are risks which include lack of protection which could lead to injuries. Research is currently ongoing but does not adequately address long term use.
